Another Reason to Ride a Harley

Isn't it supprising that Harley would stop work because its paint could expose workers to Benzene? Is there any chance that the Benzene levels are higher in the paint than those the Coke Plant workers are exposed to, both here in Erie, PA and in Tonawanda, NY? Wouldn't that be interesting to know? Did federal regulators step in, or was it because Harley-Davidson takes responsibility to protect its workers? Should Coke Plant owner JD Crane stop work when not only his employees, but also surrounding residents are exposed to Benzene at much higher levels than states allow? When will this happen? Why are states and health officials not stopping these plants?

Harley-Davidson to reopen Pa. motorcycle plant

Harley-Davidson spokesman Michael DiMauro said Friday that the shop in York, Pa., could restart paint work over the weekend, allowing assembly lines to be up and running on Monday.

The Milwaukee-based company idled the two plants Thursday after being alerted by a supplier that its paint for coating motorcycle parts could expose workers to the benzene. The chemical has been linked to cancer and other health problems.

DiMauro says tests in the York paint shop showed the benzene levels were well below exposure limits set by federal regulators.

  1. Interesting! Kudos to Harley for being responsible. Now, I wish more companies would follow suit....
