ON Wednesday 3/31/10, the other coke plant near Buffalo, owned by J.D. Crane, also experienced equipment failure which resulted in the same black clouds of smoke that we saw here in Erie. On the morning of Wednesday, March 10th, the Erie Coke Plant in Erie, Pennsylvania blanketed the Erie Bayfront with Heavy Black Smoke. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) & the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) are currently engaged in a federal lawsuit seeking to prosecute J.D. Crane, owner of the Erie Coke Plant who has amassed 6.1 million dollars in environmental violations, penalties and fines from the PA DEP.
The DEP has said that they don't know what was in the Cloud of Smoke from the Coke plant here in Erie. It seems that the EPA already knows what the Coke Oven Gas contains from the Tonawanda Coke accident so why not in Erie?
Why wasn't this Tonawanda problem reported with the Thursday's Erie Times News story about Erie Coke? The other plant is only 100 miles away and still close to fresh water. These two plants are directly related to one owner who could not care less about who he is harming and about the damage done to both communities.
